20W vs 40W Solar Umbrellas: How to Choose the Right Power Configuration
Solar panel wattage is one of the first specifications buyers notice, but a larger number is not automatically the right choice for every outdoor space. The best configuration depends on canopy size, available sunlight, electronic functions and how the umbrella will be used throughout the day.
The current 20W and 40W configurations
The latest Solargy catalog uses 20W semi-flexible photovoltaic modules on three different platforms:
- ZL02-90: 10,000mAh battery, central LED, Bluetooth audio and two USB outputs.
- ZL03-100: 20,000mAh battery, 30W adjustable fan, central LED, Bluetooth audio and two USB outputs.
- ZL04-90: all-aluminum frame, 20,000mAh battery, 30W fan, central LED, panoramic rib lighting, Bluetooth audio and USB output.
The larger wood-grain ZL01-105 uses a 40W module with a 20,000mAh battery, fan, central LED, panoramic rib lighting, Bluetooth audio and USB output.
When a 20W system makes sense
A 20W configuration gives buyers several levels of functionality. ZL02-90 focuses on lighting, audio and charging; ZL03-100 adds a fan for guard-booth and compact commercial applications; and ZL04-90 combines the fan with full-canopy ambient lighting on an all-aluminum structure.
When to consider 40W
The 40W system is paired with the larger ZL01-105 platform. Its larger photovoltaic capacity and 105-series aluminum structure suit projects that want the combined fan and panoramic lighting package on a larger, wood-grain Roman umbrella.
Five questions to ask before choosing
- How much direct sunlight reaches the site? Buildings, trees and seasonal shade affect solar collection.
- Which functions will operate most often? A fan creates a different energy demand than occasional lighting or USB charging.
- How long is the daily operating period? Restaurants and hospitality venues may use the umbrella from lunch through the evening.
- Which structure and canopy scale are required? The solar and mechanical configuration should be selected as one system.
- Is external power available? Selected applications can combine solar charging with a replaceable battery pack or external power adapter.
Choose the complete system, not wattage alone
Battery capacity, local weather, operating habits and selected functions all influence real-world performance. A project review should therefore begin with the application rather than a single specification.

Commercial outdoor projects rarely have identical requirements. A hotel terrace, restaurant patio, retail program and private-label product line may need different dimensions, colors, materials and electronic functions. A structured OEM or ODM process turns those requirements into a manufacturable solar umbrella specification. Canopy size and structure Solargy’s standard product configuration is 3 × 3 meters. Depending on the model and project, 2.5 × 2.5 meter, 3 × 4 meter and other custom dimensions can also be discussed. Column, support arm and rib specifications are selected to match the canopy and intended application. Fabric weight, coating and color The latest catalog specifies 250g color-woven fabric for ZL01-90, ZL02-90, ZL03-100, ZL04-90 and ZL01P-90. The larger ZL01-105 uses 300g premium color-woven fabric. A solar umbrella combines a structural frame, weather-resistant fabric, mechanical movement and an electrical system, so each production stage has to work as part of one complete process. Material preparation and component control Production starts with incoming materials and components. Aluminum profiles, steel ribs for selected models, canopy fabric, hardware, electrical modules and packaging materials are organized for the corresponding product. Controlling materials at the beginning helps maintain dimensional consistency and reduces problems later in assembly. Metal processing and frame preparation The umbrella’s column, support arms, ribs and connecting parts are cut, formed and machined according to the model specification.
